Harvest Summary of HRW - July 8th, 2016

Significant rain, high humidity, heavy dew and fog has resulted in extremely limited harvesting of the 2016 HRW wheat crop over the last week. This was true in almost all production areas of Kansas, Colorado and Nebraska. Producers continue to be pleased with yields, generally ranging from 40 bu/ac (2.7 tons/ha) to 60 bu/ac (4.0 tons/ha) and test weights over 60 lb/bu (78.9 kg/hl), although slightly reduced by recent rains.

There are now 195 samples in the lab originating from Texas, Oklahoma and most areas of Kansas except the northwestern one-quarter of the state where harvest is just getting into full swing. Test results listed are based on those samples with the exception of TKW and FN which are based on 148 of the 195 samples. Test weight average is still very good this week, but has been reduced by recent rain, 61.1 lb/bu (80.4 kg/hl) this week vs 61.4 lb/bu (80.7 kg/hl) last week. However, this is a marked improvement over last year’s overall average of 59.3 lb/bu (78.0 kg/hl). TKW also increased again this week from 32.2 grams last week to 32.4 grams this week and again a marked improvement over last year’s final average of 29.8 grams. Falling number (384 seconds) continues to increase and while still slightly lower than last year (400 seconds), did improve over last week (379 seconds). Protein increased this week from 11.1% to 11.2% which was less than expected and remains a concern for the trade. Many receiving facilities in areas now being harvesting are implementing discount schedules for low protein deliveries.
