The 2018 HRW wheat harvest continues to wind down in Colorado (95% complete) and Nebraska (89% complete). South Dakota made good progress this week and is now 78% complete continue with harvest. Montana harvest is still just getting underway. The Pacific Northwest states (Washington and Oregon) are now around that 50% complete mark, while Idaho (16% complete) is just now getting into the full swing of harvest, Early test weight reports are very good (60.0 lb/bu – 62.0 lb/bu , 78.9 kg/hl – 81.5kg/hl) as are the protein yield reports, ranging from mostly 11.5% – 12.0%).
Wyoming now reports protein premiums above 12% and discounts below 11% protein. They also report test weights ranging from 61.0 lb/bu to 62.5 lb/bu (80.2 kg/hl – 82.2 kg/hl). Harvest is now 65% complete in Wyoming and yields have been very good with good protein (>12%). In northwest Nebraska, continuing showers slowed harvest progress again this week while in the far west central portion of the state harvest ranged from 80 to 100% complete depending on planting dates and varieties. South Dakota reports very good test weights (between 61.5 lb/bu – 62.5 lb/bu ( 80.9 kg/hl – 82.2 kg/hl) and very good protein 13.9% statewide.
There are now 378 of an expected 500 samples now in the lab for evaluation. Those samples represent production from Wyoming and South Dakota south through the state of Texas . The Single Kernel Characterization System instrument in the lab continues to be unavailable and is being repaired. This continues to limit the ability of the lab to measure and report kernel characteristics, including TKW. Test weight increased this week overall as protein decreased reflecting samples from areas that experienced less drought impacts over the growing season. Those differences were somewhat mitigated by the very good quality crop in South Dakota.
