The 2018 HRW wheat harvest continues to wind down in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and the southeastern ¼ of Colorado. Texas is now 94% complete, Oklahoma is 99% complete, Kansas is 95% complete and Colorado is 51% complete. Nebraska is now cutting wheat in the southern half of the state (34% complete) and just getting underway in the extreme western areas. Early reports out of Nebraska indicate test weights above 60 lbs/bu (78.9 kg/hl) and protein ranging from 9%-14%. South Dakota (6% complete) is just now getting started in the southern areas with early test weights averaging 60 lbs/bu (78.9 kg/hl) and protein averaging between 11% – 12%. Oregon is now reporting to be 11% complete with harvest with no early data available. Washington and Idaho are just now beginning harvest with no data being reported.
The total samples this week remains at 224 samples of an expected 500 (Texas, Oklahoma and the southeastern ¾ of Kansas) with additional samples in transit to the lab from northwest Kansas, eastern Colorado and southern/western Nebraska. Harvest was slowed over the past week (until the last couple of days) so sample collection has also slowed as many delivery points having only been open during limited hours. Additionally, the Single Kernel Characterization System instrument in the lab is being repaired limiting the ability of the lab to measure and report kernel characteristics, including TKW. As a result, the only parameter which changed this week was falling number as another 19 samples were tested, increasing the overall FN average to 385 seconds. Averages from last week; #1 Hard Red Winter, averaging 60.3 lb/bu (79.3 kg/hl). Protein is 12.8% overall.
