Montana continues to have unsettled weather which is slowing what is left of the HRW harvest. Hail has been prevalent with these storms and east central Montana has had significant additional losses over the last week. Earlier hail storms hit the south central part of the state with reported yield losses of 30% – 50%. Montana is now 83% complete with harvest. Hotter and drier conditions will now allow HRW harvest to start wrapping up over the next week to 10 days in almost all areas.
The 2013 HRW harvest in Washington and Oregon is winding down quickly now with 89% and 99% cutting being completed respectively in each state. Idaho is also nearing completion of harvest with their crop now 87% complete and still well ahead of the 5-year average of 60% completed by this date.
Heavy morning dew, fog and cool temperatures continue to slow the North Dakota HRW harvest which is now 36% complete. The majority of the wheat cut in North Dakota is located in the southern half of the state.
With testing now done on 22 of 29 grainsheds (reporting districts) which are tributary to the Texas Gulf, average farinograph peak time is 5.6 min. which is above the 2012 average of 5.3 min. and 5-year average of 5.1 min. Average farinograph stability time is 11.9 min. which exceeds the 2012 value of 10.7 min., but slightly below the 5-year average of 12.1 min. Average farinograph absorption is 59.9% which is above the value in 2012 of 59.2% and well above the 5-year average of 58.0%. Average loaf volume across those same locations is 873(cc), exceeding the 2012 average of 786(cc) and the 5-year average of 807(cc).
