The 2018 HRW wheat harvest is now complete in all states except Montana where rain slowed harvest earlier in the week. The states of Oregon, Washington and Idaho continue to report very good yields, very good test weight and protein averaging over 11%. Overall averages in the states of Washington, Oregon and Idaho (reporting current results through the Wheat Marketing Center) and continue to show very good test weight 63.0 lb/bu (82.8 kg/hl), moisture 8.2%, total defects 0.4%, dockage 0.3%. However, protein decreased this week to 11.1%, while TKW increased to 36.2g and the average falling number decreased very slightly to 364 sec.

In Montana the Grain Lab gathered remaining samples late this week and delivered them to the Montana Wheat and Barley Committee for shipment to the lab. As was mentioned in earlier reports, HRW production in the eastern areas of Montana is extremely low as drought last fall (not unlike the previous 2 years) limited the number of planted acres.

There were 23 new samples add to the data this week, all out of PNW. Within the overall averages this week, moisture dropped 0.1% from 11.1% to 11.0%, protein also dropped slightly to 12.4% overall while test weight increased again this week to 61.0 lb/bu (80.1 kg/hl) up from 60.8 lb/bu (79.9 kg/hl). Falling number decreased very slightly again this week (371 sec) down from (372 sec) last week. Mill/dough/bake results are still very good with average flour yield remaining at (74.9%, 0.45 ash 14% mb), flour falling number 412 sec, farinograph (development time 5.3 min., stability 12.2 min.), alveograph, (W-value 269 10-4 J, 0.89 P/L ratio) and loaf volume (902 cc). All data contained herein are Unweighted averages.
