The HRW wheat harvest continues to roll as weather conditions continue to be favorable for cutting. Colorado and Nebraska are both 99% complete with harvest in South Dakota now winding down as just under 90% of the crop now cut. Montana is now over half done with HRW wheat harvest with the eastern third of the major wheat producing area of the state winding down. Drought and hot temperatures significantly reduced yields and harvested acres in that region of the state as they did in North Dakota and South Dakota. The middle third of Montana’s wheat production area is approximately 50% complete harvesting, while the western areas are well underway. Early protein reports have been very good in Montana. The Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon and Idaho) are just now into the full swing of harvest with highly variable yields being reported.

Another 42 samples were delivered to the lab this week moving the total to 396 samples of an expected 530 and representing Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Wyoming, Colorado and the majority of Nebraska and South Dakota. Overall test weight moved up this week to 60.3 lb/bu (79.3 kg/hl) up from last week’s 60.1 lb/bu (79.1 kg/hl). Overall protein increased slightly this week to 11.3% and is reflective of the higher protein being seen in the South Dakota crop. Thousand Kernel Weight (TKW) increased slightly this week to 30.6g, up from 30.5g last week. Early mill, dough and bake data indicates this crop mills well and while having a limited quantity of protein, that protein is of good quality.

All data presented are simple averages of samples tested and are not weighted for production.
