September 20th, 2013

The 2013 HRW wheat harvest is now complete with the final samples in the lab for testing and evaluation (534 of an expected 500).

Overall the 2013 HRW harvest can be characterized as one that was wide ranging in yields generally higher in eastern areas of the Great Plains from north to south and lower in production areas further west. Western areas were generally plagued with drought (3 years ongoing in western Texas and the High Plains, western and northwestern Oklahoma and western Kansas) and this year extending into eastern Colorado, western Nebraska and South Dakota.  Large areas of southwest Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas also endured 6 major freeze events from late March extending into late April.  Protein in the central and southern Plains was generally very good averaging 13%.

Montana had their share of problems as well with multiple hail storms destroying 30% to 50% of the production in several areas.  Areas of the Pacific Northwest and North Dakota battled late season rain storms and cooler temperatures resulting in a delayed completion of HRW harvest in some areas.  A final report on the 2013 HRW crop will be issued in early October when all testing has been completed and data has been evaluated and weighted for production.
