Harvest of the 2019 HRW wheat crop is beginning to wind down in many areas of the country. Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado are now 100% complete with harvest. Nebraska is 90% complete with only far northwestern Nebraska left to be harvested (higher elevation and rain delays cause slow progress in that area this week). The Wyoming HRW wheat harvest is 60% complete (all non-irrigated fields with harvest of irrigated fields expected to start early next week). Harvest continues to move rapidly in South Dakota, now 88% complete with harvest and as was reported last week, early rail shipment reports of protein were in the 12% range. Harvest continues to pick up speed in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) with (Washington 46% complete), Oregon (75% complete) and Idaho (29% complete). Montana is now reported to be just over ¼ done with harvest. The 2019 harvest overall has been one of very good yields, lower than average protein with variability which contains pockets of protein. Kernel characteristics remain very favorable from a milling standpoint.
Another 84 samples (geographically ranging from northeast Colorado, northwest Nebraska, Wyoming and South Dakota) were delivered to the lab on Thursday with testing to begin Friday. The addition of these samples is not reflected in the total number of samples or data this week. Official grade data was also received Thursday on 27 samples from (Washington/Oregon/Idaho) and are included in this week’s report. Overall test weight is now averaging (1HRW) 60.5 lb/bu (79.6 kg/hl) up from last week’s 60.3 lb/bu (79.3 kg/hl), overall average dockage dropped 0.1% to 0.4%, overall total defects dropped slightly this week to 1.3% (due to the 0.1% drop in S&B), TKW increased 0.1g this week to 32.5g and FN drop slightly to 375 seconds. All other overall averages remained unchanged this week.
