The 2016 HRW wheat harvest continues to roll. Harvest completion in Texas is (68% this week vs 59% last week), areas of central and northeast Texas continue to deal with mud and wheat under water while the northern and northwestern parts of the state that have dodged rain showers are making significant progress harvesting dryland fields. Oklahoma is (94% this week vs 71% last week) complete with harvest, irrigated wheat in the far northwestern parts of the state are the major fields yet to be cut. Wheat in Oklahoma bordering Colorado in the extreme northwest areas have been hampered by rain showers slowing harvest progress. Kansas is now (59% this week vs 23% last week) complete with harvest. The northwestern part of Kansas is the location where harvest is not yet underway. Colorado is now (8% this week vs 0% last week) complete with harvest after doing mostly test cutting last week. Harvest in parts of southeast Colorado has been slowed due to rain showers. Test cutting is now reported on the Nebraska southern border and in all likelihood extends into southeastern Nebraska
There are now 101 samples from Texas, Oklahoma and (southwest and south central) Kansas in the lab for evaluation. Test weights and protein did improve significantly (61.0 lb/bu (80.2 kg/hl) this week vs 59.0 lb/bu, (77.6 kg/hl) last week) and (11.1% this week vs 10.7% last week) respectively. TKW on 46 of the 101 samples now in the lab averaged 32.1g this week with an expectation that the average will rise again as the remainder of the 101 current samples continue to be tested. Damaged kernels and shrunken and broken kernels improved this week dropping total defects from 2.1% to 1.7%. The official grade average grade is now #1HRW.
