August 7th, 2015

There are only 3 states remaining with less than 80% of the 2015 HRW wheat crop yet to be harvested. North Dakota is now 40% complete (North Dakota has less than ½ the total HRW acres in the state planted and harvested as compared to last year), Montana is now 75% complete with harvest and Idaho is now 60% complete. North Dakota’s and Montana’s harvest progress has been slowed significantly (HRW and HRS) due to rain within the last few days. Montana’s crop has been characterized as a “checkerboard” as it relates to yield with some very low yields (due mostly to drought and early spring heat) and some very good yields in areas where localized rain fell at critical times in plant development. As a result protein content has also been inconsistent. Overall, Montana is expecting an average crop with average protein.

There are now 368 of an expected 530 samples in the lab, this includes the first 15 samples out of the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon and Idaho). TW increased this week to 58.9 lb/bu (77.5 kg/hl) from 58.6 lb/bu (77.1 kg/hl) last week, moisture decreased from 11.8% to 11.6% and is consistent with last year’s final of 11.7%. Protein decreased this week from 12.7% to 12.3% (not all samples had been tested last week) while other testing parameters changed only slightly this week.
