South Dakota is now complete with Hard Red Winter wheat harvest and early reports are good yields with very good quality. Their simple average of test weight across all samples is over 62.5 pounds per bushel and 12.3% average protein (with a range of 11.3% – 14.3%). South Dakota also had a very clean crop with an average of 0.36% dockage.

North Dakota is now 85% complete with HRW harvest, Montana 21% complete with HRW harvest, and the PNW states of Washington, Oregon and Idaho are just now starting HRW harvest in the southern areas of each of those states.

There was very little change in kernel data this week with 410 samples in the lab of an expected 530. However, with the addition of Kansas grainshed data (8 of 10 total) to the simple averages, the dough functionality data improved this week to reflect a crop much closer to the 5-year average. Overall 2012 HRW Gulf Tributary average alveograph P value is now 77mm (5-year average is 74 mm), the average L value is 100 mm (5-year average is 100 mm) and the W value is very close (243 (10-4 joules) to the 5-year average of 242 (10-4 joules). Farinograph values also improved to near the 5-year averages with development time now averaging 5.3 minutes a (5-year average 5.4 minutes) and farinograph stability averaging 10.8 minutes (5-year average is 10.9 minutes).
